Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi intends to go to Switzerland today, Saturday, a day after the US-Iranian talks that were scheduled in the Bürgenstock resort were postponed, according to what an informed source told Axios, indicating that the plan is still subject to change.
A source from one of the mediating countries confirmed that Araqchi informed a number of his counterparts, yesterday, Friday, that the ceasefire in Lebanon is a pivotal issue for Iran, and represents a decisive factor in the success or failure of the US-Iranian negotiations.
A second source from one of the mediating countries also explained that the Iranians stressed the need to see the ceasefire actually enter into force before heading to Switzerland to begin technical talks with the American side.
On the other hand, an American official reported that White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is on his way to Switzerland, where the first round of talks with the Iranian side regarding a possible nuclear agreement is expected to be held. He added that US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Jared Kushner, is already in Switzerland.
An informed source revealed that the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, is also in Switzerland to assist in the technical aspects of the nuclear talks before the arrival of the senior negotiators, noting that he met with American technical teams there yesterday.
This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump expressed his optimism that all outstanding issues with Iran would be resolved within the 60-day deadline set by the memorandum of understanding signed between the American and Iranian sides, with the possibility of extending it.
It also comes after the postponement of the meeting that was scheduled yesterday in Switzerland to launch technical talks between the two sides on the nuclear file, following the Israeli military escalation in Lebanon, amid American intelligence reports that spoke of Tel Aviv seeking to obstruct reaching an understanding between Washington and Tehran.
