In a remarkable development that carries political and security dimensions, Israeli reports revealed that the ongoing negotiations between Lebanon and Israel may put President Joseph Aoun in danger, amid escalating regional tension, especially with Iran.
According to a report published by the Hebrew “Channel 12”, the Israeli Military Intelligence Division (Aman) presented during a session of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee in the Knesset a security assessment that included sensitive data, part of which was approved for publication, most notably that the Lebanese president’s involvement in the negotiation process with Israel “may put his life in danger.”
The session, which was held in light of escalating tensions with Iran, also discussed developments on the Lebanese and Iranian fronts, as the assessment indicated that part of the Iranian ballistic missile system had been restored, and that Mojtaba Khamenei was still alive, at a time when Beirut was not currently included in the target bank for strikes, despite having a mandate to carry out attacks against “emerging threats.”
In this context, the assessment confirmed that dismantling Hezbollah remains a “long-term goal” for Israel, indicating that the confrontation with the party is still open in multiple stages.
On the political level, the head of the Foreign and Security Committee, Boaz Bismuth, called on the Israelis to “remain vigilant,” warning of “expected developments” in the next stage, and indicating in his statements that “the Iranian regime will pay a heavy price.”
Bismuth also announced that Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir will attend a closed session of the committee next Sunday to provide a comprehensive security briefing, after he had refrained from attending in recent months, stressing that parliamentary oversight of the army “is not an option but a duty.”
