The Russia Today website reported that recently released data indicated that more than half of the countries in the world have abandoned the death penalty, while 40 countries still allow the penalty legally, but have not carried out any executions for at least ten years.

There are five countries in which the death penalty is limited to exceptional cases, such as times of war, including Brazil, Ghana, Guatemala, Peru, and El Salvador.

As for 35 countries, the death penalty is still effectively implemented.

In recent years, 10 countries have joined the list of countries that have abolished the death penalty:

– Zambia

– Palestine

– Papua New Guinea

– Equatorial Guinea
– Kazakhstan

– Sierra Leone
– Chad
