The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that the Border Guard Forces thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotic substances on the Syrian-Lebanese border, in the area of Juroud Assal al-Ward in the Damascus countryside, after monitoring and following up on two suspicious motorcycles that were moving in the area.
According to the Ministry, the competent personnel tried to stop the two bikes, but the smugglers opened fire, which required a response to the source of the fire. The clash resulted in the injury of two smugglers, while a third suspect managed to escape.
The Syrian Ministry of Defense indicated that all seized items had been confiscated, stressing that the Anti-Narcotics Administration is continuing to implement specific security operations to protect society, maintain public security, and dismantle smuggling networks targeting the stability of the region.
This operation comes in an area that is considered one of the rugged border points between Syria and Lebanon, where the barrens and mountainous paths constitute an environment that smugglers exploit to move away from official roads, especially in cases related to drugs and illegal goods.
The Assal al-Ward barrens gain special security importance due to their border location and their connection to open mountainous areas, which makes monitoring and prosecution operations there more complex, and requires the security and military forces to intensify follow-up to prevent these illegal crossings from being transformed into fixed smuggling lines.
The incident reflects the continued security pressure on the smuggling networks between the two countries, as the Syrian authorities seek to control the borders and pursue groups that are active in transporting narcotic drugs, whether via motorcycles or through desert routes that are difficult to control without precise field operations.
Between prior monitoring, direct clashes, and confiscation of seized items, the operation appears to be a clear message that the Syrian-Lebanese border has entered a period of greater security tightening, especially in areas that have long been a corridor for smugglers and promotional networks.
