Tension escalated on Tuesday evening on the Khaldeh-Naameh road, after a number of supporters of the detained Islamists blocked the road with burning tires, in protest against the wording of the general amnesty law proposal that was approved in the joint parliamentary committees.

The movement caused traffic paralysis and stifling congestion on both lanes, amid a widespread state of anger among the protesters who considered that the proposed formula did not do justice to the detained Islamists and did not address what they described as “existing injustice.”

This move comes hours after Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Elias Bou Saab, announced that a “formula acceptable to the parliamentary majority” regarding the amnesty law had been reached, coinciding with the continued political and popular objections to some of the provisions and exceptions contained therein.

Attention is turning to the General Assembly session on Thursday, where the law proposal is supposed to be put to a vote, amid fears of widespread protests in the street as the debate intensifies over the issue.
