The National Litani River Authority, through the Southern Irrigation Authority and in coordination with the Sidon Department, began implementing new model works within the campus of the Al-Qasimiya-Ras Al-Ain Irrigation Canal in the town of Adloun, within the framework of a plan aimed at organizing the sections located adjacent to residential neighborhoods and improving their environmental reality.
The work includes organizing and rehabilitating the canal, cleaning the sides, removing weeds and accumulated obstacles, in addition to collecting the cleaning products and transporting them to the places designated for them, which contributes to keeping the canal and its surroundings clean and orderly.
This step aims to transform a number of sections of the canal that pass through residential areas into model spaces, and to reduce the accumulation of waste and solid materials that may impede the flow of water or affect the safety of irrigation facilities and the surrounding environment.
The works come within the plan developed by the Sidon Department to preserve the irrigation canal and its sanctuary, and to raise the level of care for the sections near homes and agricultural lands, in a way that provides a better environment for the people and farmers living and working adjacent to it.
The Qasimiya-Ras al-Ain Canal constitutes an essential artery for irrigating large agricultural areas in southern Lebanon, which makes maintaining its course and removing obstacles from it a necessity to ensure the continuity of water’s access to the lands and reduce disruptions and problems that may result from the accumulation of waste and weeds.
The Authority stressed the importance of the cooperation of residents and farmers to maintain the work carried out, by refraining from throwing waste and solid materials inside the canal or within its precincts, as this has direct repercussions on the movement of water, the cleanliness of the area, and the safety of the irrigation network.
This workshop falls within the ongoing institutional work carried out by the National Litani River Authority to protect irrigation facilities, improve the reality of the canals and their surroundings, and enhance awareness of the shared responsibility in preserving water and public facilities.
