Tomorrow afternoon, Monday, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency session to discuss the rapid developments in Lebanon, based on a request submitted by France in light of the ongoing Israeli escalation and expansion of military operations in the south.
According to what Agence France-Presse reported from diplomatic sources, the meeting comes in the wake of recent field developments, especially the Israeli army’s announcement of its control of the historic Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, coinciding with the continuation of air strikes and ground incursions in a number of southern regions.
The sources explained that the session will be held immediately after another emergency meeting called by the Romanian side against the backdrop of a drone collision incident with a building in the city of Galati, with the Security Council meeting dedicated to Lebanon starting at 15:00 New York time.
This international move comes hours after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced that Paris would request an urgent session of the Security Council, stressing that his country is following with great concern the military escalation in Lebanon and the expansion of the scope of operations and evacuation orders.
The upcoming session coincides with the escalation of international diplomatic pressure to contain the confrontation and prevent the situation from sliding towards a more dangerous stage, at a time when the southern front is witnessing the most violent wave of escalation in months, amid warnings of broad humanitarian and security repercussions on Lebanon and the region.
