Representative Bilal Al-Hashimi praised the approach of the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, to the general amnesty law file, considering that it combined the human dimension with the requirements of justice, and at the same time preserved the rights of the victims and the prestige of the state and its institutions.
Al-Hashimi said, in a statement, that he thanks President Aoun for “his wise and responsible approach to the general amnesty law file since its inception, and for the humanitarian sense and national keenness he demonstrated to address it in a way that preserves justice, preserves the rights of victims, and puts an end to suffering that has lasted for many years.”
He stressed that the image of “the president who brings together all the Lebanese” was revealed, as he put it, through this approach, considering that President Aoun deals with national issues “in the spirit of a statesman who puts the interest of Lebanon and the unity of its people above political and sectarian calculations.”
He pointed out that the President of the Republic’s approach is based on “a delicate balance that combines the force of law and the mercy of justice, without compromising anyone’s rights or harming the prestige of the state and its institutions.”
Al-Hashimi added: “The president’s position was not bias towards a faction, but rather a victory for Lebanon and the right of its children to a just and responsible state, capable of redressing grievances and turning the painful pages with courage and wisdom, under the roof of the constitution and the law.”
He continued: “We are proud to have at the head of the republic a president who feels the suffering of the Lebanese people with a national conscience, who bears his responsibilities with courage and impartiality, and who makes the country’s unity, stability, and supreme interest a constant compass for his positions and decisions.”
Al-Hashimi concluded by stressing his appreciation to President Aoun “for his pivotal role and comprehensive national stance, and for his contribution to opening a window of hope for families exhausted by waiting, and establishing a real gateway to national reconciliation that preserves rights, establishes justice, and enhances the prestige of the state.”
Al-Hashimi’s position comes in light of the continuing political and legal debate surrounding the general amnesty file, and the accompanying demands to find a formula that balances between addressing the conditions of detainees and convicts on the one hand, and preserving the rights of victims and respecting laws and judicial institutions on the other hand.
