“Lebanon Debate”
The President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, affirmed that “Lebanon seeks to end the state of hostility with Israel through diplomacy, stressing the necessity of implementing the framework agreement in its entirety by both parties, far from selectivity.”
Aoun’s position came after his meeting with his Greek counterpart, Constantinos Tasoulas, where he began his speech by thanking the Greek President for his invitation and warm reception, expressing his appreciation for the permanent support that Greece provides to Lebanon, the leadership, government and people, at the political, humanitarian and military levels.
Aoun pointed out that “the main goal of the visit is to develop Lebanese-Greek relations at various levels, in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries,” noting the role that Athens plays in supporting Lebanon within the European Union and international forums.
He stressed that “Lebanon’s stability is necessary for the stability of the region and Europe,” warning that “any disturbance in Lebanon will have negative repercussions that go beyond its borders and affect the entire region.”
Regarding the situation in the south, Aoun stressed that “Lebanon and its people are tired of wars, and that the goal of negotiating with Israel is to end the state of hostility,” noting that “Lebanon, under American sponsorship, reached the signing of the framework agreement.”
He explained that “this agreement cannot be implemented unilaterally, but must be fully implemented by both parties and without selectivity,” asking Greece to help Lebanon, as much as possible, in ensuring Israel’s commitment to implementing it.
Aoun concluded by stressing that “it is time for Lebanon to rest after the tragedies of wars it has experienced,” stressing that “the solution is through diplomacy, not through war, and that Lebanon is determined to end the state of hostility and achieve stability.”
