In a new development in the wake of the fire that broke out in the region, the mayor of Tannourine, lawyer Yasser Neama, denied the news circulating about the explosion of a mine left from war in the Tannourine Cedar Forest Reserve, explaining that what happened was the fall of a rock that was leaning on an oak tree, which was consumed by fire in the Niha Forest – Hadath Al-Jabba – Kfour Al-Arabi.
Neama stressed that “the municipality is working with all competent and concerned agencies to contain the fire and prevent it from reaching the Tannourine cedar forest.”
The mayor’s clarification comes after the General Directorate of Civil Defense announced that one of its members was slightly injured following the explosion of an old mine left over from war in the Tannourine Cedar Reserve, explaining that the explosion occurred after a stone fell on the mine, and that the member was taken to the hospital to receive treatment.
This coincides with the continuation of operations to combat the fire that broke out in the area between Tannourine and Douma in the Batroun district, amid extremely rugged terrain that obstructs firefighting engines from directly reaching some of the fire spots.
Firefighting teams are working to contain the fire and limit its expansion, while efforts are focused on preventing the fire from reaching the Tannourine Cedar Forest, in light of the continuation of field operations with the participation of civil defense teams and the support of a Lebanese army helicopter.
