The Israeli army announced on Sunday the implementation of a security operation in southern Lebanon, claiming that it resulted in the “elimination of an armed man” who infiltrated what it describes as the “front defense area.” The army justified the operation as aiming to remove a direct danger threatening the northern towns.
In a post on the “X” platform, the Israeli army spokeswoman, Ella Wawiyeh, stated: The forces of the 769th Brigade, led by the 91st Division, are carrying out field operations in southern Lebanon, south of the area that Israel calls the “Forward Defense Zone,” with the aim of preventing any direct threat to the towns of the north.
She added that the forces had spotted an armed man earlier today, Sunday, who she said had violated the ceasefire agreements, crossed the front defense area, and approached the forces in a way that she considered an “immediate threat.”
Wawiyeh explained that “a short time after he was spotted, and within the framework of a quick closure, the forces eliminated the gunman and removed the threat,” stressing that the Israeli army “will continue to work to cleanse the areas under its control to remove any threat to the citizens of the State of Israel and its forces.”
These developments come in light of the continuing state of tension on the southern border, despite the recent entry into force of the ceasefire agreements, with the continued exchange of accusations of field violations. Over the past few days, Israel has announced the continuation of its military operations within areas it considers necessary for its border security, while the Lebanese side stresses the need to respect sovereignty and stop all military operations.
South Lebanon is considered a sensitive area that witnesses intermittent military movements, while international parties monitor the implementation of the truce agreements, fearing that the situation will deteriorate into a broader confrontation.
