This evening, the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, received a phone call from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, during which the latest developments related to the situation in Lebanon after the ceasefire took effect were discussed.
During the call, President Sisi affirmed his full support for the steps taken by President Aoun to stop the military escalation, most notably direct bilateral negotiations aimed at ending military operations and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied areas in southern Lebanon, in addition to the deployment of the Lebanese army along the southern border, ensuring the Lebanese state’s full control over its territory.
Al-Sisi also reiterated Egypt’s support for the Lebanese people, expressing his country’s readiness to provide all possible support to end the suffering of the Lebanese.
For his part, President Aoun expressed his thanks and appreciation to his Egyptian counterpart for his supportive stances, which embody the depth of the fraternal relations that bind the two countries and peoples, appreciating the role that Egypt plays in supporting Lebanon, and the relief aid that Cairo recently sent, and those that it plans to send in the future.
The two presidents agreed on the necessity of continuing communication between them to follow up on new developments.
This contact comes at a sensitive stage in the Lebanese arena after the establishment of a ceasefire, as political and diplomatic efforts are focused on ensuring Israel’s withdrawal from the areas into which it has penetrated in the south, and consolidating the deployment of the Lebanese army along the border, in implementation of the arrangements agreed upon to stop military actions.
Egypt plays a traditional supportive role for stability in Lebanon, through political endeavors and humanitarian and relief aid, and also participates in Arab efforts aimed at avoiding the situation from deteriorating into a broader confrontation. This contact reflects Cairo’s emphasis on supporting the Lebanese state institutions and its sovereign choices, within the framework of supporting the negotiating path that aims to stabilize stability and extend state control over its entire territory.
