Iran denied the validity of what was reported by the “Axios” website regarding the existence of new arrangements for managing the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the decision regarding the Strait rests with Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, as they are the two coastal countries.

The Iranian “Tasnim” agency quoted an informed source as saying that the Strait of Hormuz falls within the internal and territorial waters of both Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, stressing that any decision related to its management is taken by the two countries.

The source explained that future arrangements regarding the Strait are determined in accordance with Article Five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which holds Iran responsible for determining these arrangements through dialogue with the Sultanate of Oman.

He added that Qatar’s participation in the discussions comes within the framework of its role as a mediator, in addition to exchanging views between Iran and the rest of the countries of the region.

The American website Axios had claimed, based on what it described as a “draft memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran,” that the agreement includes new arrangements for managing the Strait of Hormuz, including reopening it within a new mechanism.
