An international coalition of intelligence services has warned that artificial intelligence models capable of launching major cyberattacks that could bypass the defenses of governments and companies are months, not years, away.

According to a report by “CNN”, translated by “Lebanon 24”, the “Five Eyes” coalition, which includes the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, called on governments and corporate leaders to “act now” to strengthen their defenses in the face of advanced cyber threats. This rare call to action comes after the administration of US President Donald Trump ordered the company “Anthropic” to suspend the use of its most advanced models by foreign nationals, in a move that reflects the growing concern among Western countries about the emerging capabilities of these devices. Technology.

According to the report, the intelligence services said in a joint statement on Monday that advanced artificial intelligence models “are expected to exceed the sector’s current expectations and radically change offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.” She added: “The timeline is not years, but months.”

The report continued: “Researchers and managers in the artificial intelligence sector have expressed various concerns regarding the safety of this advanced technology. The leaders of the “Five Eyes” described these models as potentially lowering “barriers to malicious actors,” and increasing the speed and complexity of attacks. Experts in artificial intelligence said that the message is “very clear,” and may carry worrying repercussions not only for governments and large companies, but also for small and medium-sized companies around the world.”

The report adds: “Olivia Chen, director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for US Studies at the University of Sydney, told CNN that the key message is that in the age of artificial intelligence, breakthroughs will occur, and it is not a question of ‘if’ but of ‘when,’ so it is important to prepare now.” The broad directive issued by the US administration against Anthropic’s “Mythos 5” and “Fable 5” models was among the broadest measures taken by a government in response to the advanced capabilities of an artificial intelligence model. The “Mythos” model raised widespread cyber concerns, after the company said that it was highly capable of discovering security vulnerabilities. But “Anthropic” said that it believes that the US government “has become aware” of a way to break the internal restrictions of the general “Fable” model, or what is known as bypassing its security barriers. The company and the US administration are continuing meetings to try to resolve the issue.

Small businesses are most vulnerable

According to the report, to confront the danger, the leaders of the “Five Eyes” said that companies and officials should invest in cyber defenses, update old systems or fix faulty software, and limit the people who have access to sensitive systems. Although artificial intelligence is used by adversaries to move more quickly and more effectively, it is also part of the solution, according to the security alliance.

Shen saw that there is a “huge gap” in the defenses of many governments and companies. She said that sophisticated companies, often large ones, are already investing in cybersecurity and will be more prepared. The most at risk are small and medium-sized companies that may not have invested sufficiently yet, and in practice they will be “easy targets.”

Artificial intelligence models are advancing very rapidly, while independent evaluations have shown that some models are approaching expert levels in cyber capabilities. This acceleration appears to have put lawmakers trying to establish controls in a difficult position.
