According to the “BGR” website, the new feature relies on artificial intelligence to create custom icon packs that can be applied at the system level in “Google Pixel 6” phones and later.
Some packages allow the user to modify the colors or style by changing parts of the guide text, with editable words appearing in a dotted line underneath. In contrast, other packages come with a fixed design that cannot be completely changed, such as the “Disco” package, which has a pre-defined appearance.
However, the user can make some simple adjustments to make the package more suitable for the home screen, including stopping the movement by activating the “Static” option, which makes the icons static instead of animated.
The idea for the “Disco” pack goes back to a post on the “X” platform by user RaceJohnson, who talked about the concept of “Discomorphism.” Later, Samir Samat, head of the Android system at Google, indicated the possibility of bringing this mode to Android phones, before it actually becomes available to Pixel users.
The “Disco” package is distinguished by being brighter and more vibrant than the default options, especially with the adoption of the “Material 3 Expressive” design, which gives the phone’s interface a more mobile and flexible character.
To use this feature, the phone must be a “Pixel 6” or later, and running the March 2026 update known as “Pixel Feature Drop,” or Android 16 QPR3 or later. You can check the availability of the update by going to Settings, then System, then Software Updates, then System Update.
To activate the package, you can open Settings and then choose “Wallpaper & style,” or long press on an empty space on the main screen and then choose the same menu. After that, you must go to the Home screen tab, and scroll to the “Icons” option.
The user is presented with 4 options: “Default”, “Minimal”, “Custom”, and “Create”. After choosing “Create”, you can scroll to the “Create a new style” section and choose “Disco”. The system then creates a new set of icons, which can be downloaded via the download button at the top of the screen.
After the download is complete, the user returns to the previous menu, then selects the “Disco” package from the “Your styles” section, and presses the confirmation mark at the top of the screen to apply it to the home screen.
Thus, Google gives Pixel phones an additional layer of customization, blending artificial intelligence and animated design, in an attempt to make the home screen more personal and lively.
