Against the backdrop of ongoing military tension in the south, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam chaired a security meeting on Sunday morning at the government headquarters. The meeting included Minister of Defense Michel Mansi, Minister of Interior and Municipalities Ahmed Al-Hajjar, Director General of the Internal Security Forces, Major General Raed Abdullah, Head of the Information Division, Brigadier General Mahmoud Qebrosli, and Director of Operations in the Lebanese Army, Brigadier General George Rizkallah.
The meeting revolved around discussing field developments in the south and their impact on the displacement movement and security challenges affecting multiple Lebanese regions, in light of the continuing clashes and mutual threats along the border.
Salam listened to an explanation from the military and security leaders about the measures taken to control the security situation and follow up on the displacement movement, in addition to the planned plans to strengthen the security presence in vital areas.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of doubling security measures throughout Lebanon, especially in the capital, Beirut, with the aim of preserving the safety of citizens and their property, and preventing any attempts to undermine internal stability in light of the sensitive conditions the country is going through.
This meeting is being held at a time when the south is witnessing a gradual escalation, amid continuous Israeli warnings and mutual attacks, which has led to the displacement of residents from some border villages towards safer areas in the interior.
The Lebanese government is working to contain the consequences of the confrontation, both on the security and humanitarian levels, through direct coordination between the army and security forces, and activating emergency plans to prepare for any possible developments.
Government sources explained that the meetings will continue to follow up on the latest developments, in the midst of a phase considered “one of the most sensitive since the outbreak of the last confrontation.”
