US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy may assume the task of escorting oil tankers crossing the Strait of Hormuz, if necessary, in light of the continuing military operation against Iran. Trump stressed that the United States is committed to ensuring the free flow of energy to all countries of the world.
In his post on the “Truth Social” platform, Trump stated that he had directed the US International Development Finance Corporation to provide insurance coverage against political risks and guarantees to secure financing for maritime trade, especially energy shipments crossing the Gulf region, at “very reasonable” prices, indicating that this offer will be available to all shipping companies.
In a related context, Politico newspaper reported that the Trump administration is considering providing military protection for oil and gas tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, in light of the noticeable rise in oil and gas prices, and after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced the closure of the strait, against the backdrop of the joint military operation between America and Israel against Iran. The report quoted an informed source that “military support for oil and gas supplies” represents a possible option, warning that energy markets may witness increasing pressure in the coming days as the campaign escalates and expands, and that access to the Strait of Hormuz is considered extremely important for oil and natural gas supplies coming from Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
