Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told CBS that the door remains open to a diplomatic solution with the United States, stressing that diplomacy is “the only way” Washington can address its concerns.
Araqchi pointed out the possibility of his meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Geneva on Thursday, as part of efforts to revive the negotiation process.
He stressed that the American military buildup “will not frighten Iran and there is no need for it,” stressing that Tehran has repeatedly affirmed the peacefulness of its nuclear program. He added that his country is working on preparing a proposal for a nuclear agreement, while insisting on its right to enrich uranium and the rights guaranteed by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
During the last round of talks that took place in Geneva last Tuesday, Witkopf askedJared Kushner Araghchi is requested to submit a written and detailed proposal within a few days. They stated that President Donald Trump’s position is based on not allowing uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, while expressing the United States’ readiness to consider an Iranian proposal that includes “symbolic enrichment” if Iran proves that the plan prevents any path leading to possession of a nuclear weapon.
For his part, Araqchi explained in an interview on MS Now that he will finish drafting the proposal over the weekend, and will present it to Witkoff and Kushner as soon as he obtains approval from the political leadership in Tehran.
This comes at a time when Trump has repeatedly indicated that he is considering launching limited military attacks. It is noteworthy that Trump had given Tehran a deadline ranging between 10 and 15 days to reach an agreement or face “very bad things,” coinciding with American military reinforcements in the Middle East that raised fears of the outbreak of a broader war.
