In a scathing critique, US President Donald Trump attacked the French authorities’ decision to grant French citizenship to American actor George Clooney, his Lebanese-British lawyer wife Amal Alamuddin, and their two children. This attack highlights his continued resentment of artistic figures who support the Democratic Party.
Trump, whose administration supports European parties opposed to immigration, pointed out that France is facing a “terrible” problem related to crime and immigration, describing its policies in this regard as failures. These statements came in response to Clooney, his wife, and their 8-year-old twins obtaining French citizenship under a decree issued in the Official Gazette on Saturday.
Trump wrote on his “Truth Social” platform: “Great news! George and Amal Clooney, who are among the worst political forecasters of all time, have officially become French citizens, a country that unfortunately has a major crime problem due to its terrible handling of the immigration file.”
In another post on New Year’s Eve, Trump compared the situation in France to what he called the “chaos” that prevailed in the United States under Democratic President Joe Biden, describing him as “sleepy.”
It is noteworthy that George Clooney is considered one of the most prominent supporters of the Democratic Party and one of Trump’s harshest critics. Trump alluded to Clooney’s support for Biden during the 2024 US presidential elections, before he “abandoned him,” as he said, due to concerns about the Democratic candidate’s age, during a fundraising event.
Trump added sarcastically: “Clooney got more publicity in politics than he got in his few and modest films. He was not a movie star, but just a regular guy who constantly complains about common sense in politics.”
This attack comes in the context of the ongoing controversy between Trump and a number of Hollywood stars who criticize his policies, especially on issues of immigration, democracy, and international relations.
