“Lebanon Debate”
Minister of Education and Higher Education, Rima Karami, completed her tour in the south, visiting the town of Borj Qalawiya in the Bint Jbeil district of Nabatieh Governorate, where she was briefed on the conditions of the educational sector and the difficulties facing schools and educational bodies.
Karami stressed, “the necessity of not rushing to approve any new contracts before ensuring the necessary financial appropriations,” explaining that “concluding contracts is linked to the approval of the Civil Service Council and the Ministry of Finance, and proving the availability of the required budgets.”
She said: “There are professors who are currently teaching, and others who previously taught, and we have not yet been able to pay their dues. I do not want to commit to anyone before I am able to pay his salary and give him his rights.”
She pointed to the possibility of a delay in securing all educational materials for students, considering that the continuation of the educational process under the current circumstances resembles a “miracle.”
Karami praised the exceptional efforts made by educational bodies in Lebanon, saying, “There is no educator on the face of the earth who does what educators in Lebanon do under these circumstances.”
She added, “I am extremely proud of you. The start may not be complete, it will be difficult, and the scene may not seem perfect at first, but together we will be able to restore order and return our children to school.”
