“Lebanon Debate”
An agricultural expert explained to “Lebanon Debate” that the impact of the rains that Lebanon is witnessing on crops remains variable, as it carries important benefits for the soil and trees after the dry summer months, but it may harm mature crops if it becomes severe or accompanied by hail and strong winds.
He pointed out that rain increases soil moisture, reduces the need for irrigation, reduces heat stress, and also washes away dust from tree leaves and is especially beneficial for olives and crops that have not yet entered the harvesting stage.
On the other hand, he pointed out that the timing of the storm is sensitive for grapes, figs, apples and pears, as high humidity may lead to the fruits cracking or rotting, while strong winds can cause crops that are close to maturity to fall.
He warned that the accumulation of water may harm exposed vegetables and affect their roots, in addition to the possibility of damage to greenhouses due to wind, stressing that hail remains the greatest danger, as it may cause direct wounds to fruits and leaves within minutes.
The agricultural expert concluded that rain is generally beneficial if it remains sporadic and short and is not accompanied by hail or torrents, but its harms may outweigh its benefits in areas that witness heavy rainfall and strong winds, especially in grape vineyards and fruit orchards ready for harvesting.
