“Lebanon Debate”
Attention is turning to the next few hours amid increasing indications that an understanding leading to a ceasefire in Lebanon is approaching, after days of intense contacts led by the US Ambassador to Beirut, Michel Issa, between Lebanese officials and the parties concerned with the file.
According to “Lebanon Debate” information, white smoke is expected to rise in the coming hours regarding the initiative aimed at a ceasefire in Lebanon, amid an atmosphere of cautious optimism that has begun to take precedence over the stagnation scene that characterized the past days, in light of official anticipation of the crystallization of the required guarantees regarding commitment to the ceasefire and the mechanisms for its implementation.
The information indicates that the final response to the proposed initiative may be issued within hours, which may open the door to the gradual start of implementation of the agreement within the next twenty-four hours.
These developments gain special importance after an extensive tour carried out by the US Ambassador to Beirut, Michel Issa, which included the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nabih Berri, and the Prime Minister, Nawaf Salam, as part of an intense American effort to stabilize the calm and prevent the region from sliding into a broader confrontation.
Issa had released remarkable positive signals following his recent meetings, stressing that the negotiations had reached the “point of no return” and that they were moving in the right direction, which increased the level of optimism about the possibility of achieving a political breakthrough soon.
In this context, the Ain al-Tineh meeting between Berri and Issa emerged as a turning point in the communications process, as information indicates that the Council President handed the American ambassador data related to Hezbollah’s position on the proposed initiative, amid talk of a willingness to provide guarantees related to commitment to the ceasefire if the corresponding guarantees are available.
The information indicates that Qatar plays a fundamental role behind the scenes, through continuous communications with various parties, which makes the current mediation a product of the intersection of American and Qatari efforts, in addition to the role that Berri assumes in managing internal political communication. While some details are still under discussion, the prevailing atmosphere in Beirut suggests that the coming hours will be decisive, either in the direction of announcing an understanding that puts an end to the escalation and launching the path of calm, or in the direction of extending the negotiation phase pending the completion of the guarantees required from all parties.
