The US representative to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, announced on Tuesday that Washington is working in cooperation with the Gulf states to draft a new resolution regarding developments in the Strait of Hormuz.
Waltz explained that the draft resolution aims to condemn Iran for its closure of the Strait, noting that this step affects the economies of the entire world. He added that the project also includes condemning Iranian attacks against commercial ships in the Strait, in addition to other activities that include planting mines and imposing fees in the region.
He stressed that the draft resolution would include holding Iran accountable for what he described as violations of international law, in addition to demanding that it reveal the locations of mines planted in the Strait of Hormuz.
He also stressed that the United States is working to ensure that international waterways are not used as a weapon, noting that the administration of President Donald Trump stresses the need to ensure the safe passage of ships in the strait.
This comes in light of the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz since late February, which led to the disruption of the transit of essential supplies of oil, gas, and fertilizers, at a time when the United States continues to impose a blockade on Iranian ports since April 13.
