Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu published a poignant message on his account on the “X” platform, in which he remembers his brother Yoni Netanyahu, who was killed in the “Yonatan” operation, and links this sacrifice with the decisions he makes today in light of what he described as an “existential war.”
Netanyahu wrote in his post: “Yoni was my wonderful brother, the north star who helped me make my way through the turns of life,” and added that he was an example and a role model for him and his brother Udi, and he supported and advised them in fateful moments.
He explained that his brother had rare qualities since his childhood. He had an inner calm, strong determination, and a clear sense of purpose, stressing that he always knew where he was heading and what was required of him.
He said: “Throughout its life, the State of Israel has fought battles for its existence. As long as Yoni was alive, I was convinced that he would be at the forefront, in leadership, in the place that would ensure its future.”
Netanyahu added that when he learned of his brother’s death in the “Yonatan” operation to free the hostages, he felt as if his life had ended, considering that the matter went beyond just losing a dear brother, but rather it was like losing the “anchor” of his life, expressing his feeling that “I was confident that I would never recover.”
But he explained that over time he realized that Yoni’s legacy did not end with his death. On the contrary, generations of young people read his book of letters, and many fighters were inspired by his values, adding: “Yoni did not just leave behind a memory of heroism, but he left a path for us.”
He emphasized that his brother’s sacrifice was the motivation for him to engage in public service, noting that as Israel’s prime minister in “days of existential war,” when he sends soldiers into battle and pilots to Iran, he sees in each of them the image of his brother.
He concluded his message by saying: “I miss you, Yoni, my beloved brother, I miss you so much.”
