A fire broke out on board the US aircraft carrier USS Dwight Eisenhower while it was undergoing routine maintenance at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Virginia. This incident once again highlighted the potential risks associated with maintenance work being conducted on this important marine piece in the US fleet. The fire injured three sailors before the crew was able to quickly control it.
USNI News reported that the fire broke out on Tuesday while the carrier was docked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. A US Navy spokesperson confirmed that the fire was “small” and crew members and dock staff were able to contain and extinguish it immediately.
The spokesman also stated that three sailors were injured as a result of the fire and received the necessary treatment by the medical team on board the ship, then returned to carry out their duties. No serious injuries or apparent structural damage to the carrier has been recorded so far. It is not yet clear whether this incident will affect the scheduled time period for maintenance work.
It is noteworthy that the “USS Dwight Eisenhower” entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on January 8, 2025 as part of a planned regular maintenance program after the end of its previous deployment with the US Fifth Fleet between 2023 and 2024. According to what the US Navy previously stated, this maintenance work includes propulsion systems, crew accommodation facilities, combat systems and aviation support capabilities.
This accident comes at a time when the importance of American aircraft carriers in naval military operations is increasing, making any technical malfunction or accident that occurs on board a subject of careful attention and follow-up, especially when it comes to a carrier the size of the “Eisenhower” and its operational role in recent years. Until now, the causes of the fire have not been clarified, while the competent authorities continue to monitor the technical and logistical repercussions resulting from it.
The USS Dwight Eisenhower is considered one of the most prominent aircraft carriers in the US Navy and played important operational roles during its recent deployment within the Fifth Fleet in the Middle East.
