General Strike in Gabès in Protest Against Pollution, Presidential Intervention to Resolve the Crisis.
A general strike has been declared in the Tunisian governorate of Gabès in protest against the pollution caused by the local chemical complex, amid demands to stop harmful emissions and presidential intervention to find urgent solutions.
The decision to strike came in response to a growing wave of protests from residents, who are demanding an end to gas emissions and pollutants that threaten the environment and public health.
A trade union official confirmed that the administrative board of the local labor union unanimously adopted the strike decision, noting that it will monitor developments to take appropriate decisions.
In contrast, Tunisian President Kais Saied affirmed the work to find immediate solutions to pollution, after previous calls to put an end to chemical pollution and repair the damage as soon as possible.
The Chott Essalem area witnessed a protest denouncing the deterioration of the environmental situation, after students were suffocated as a result of gas emissions from the industrial units of the chemical complex.
The local labor union in Gabès considered that the city is subjected to a “slow and silent killing” due to polluting industries, and called for the dismantling of harmful industrial units and the cessation of harmful activities.
It is worth mentioning that the chemical complex, which includes phosphate filtration units, is located in the Chott Essalem area inhabited by about 18,000 people and was established in 1972.
