Egypt Seeks Progress with Tehran and Washington on Nuclear File Issue
Egypt seeks a breakthrough in the Iranian nuclear file through contacts with Tehran, Washington, and the IAEA.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry reported that Cairo agreed with Tehran, Washington, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to “continue following up on efforts and contacts, and studying the ideas presented” in order to achieve a breakthrough in the Iranian nuclear file issue.
This came in a statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, following a series of phone calls made by the Foreign Minister with his Iranian counterpart, the US envoy to the Middle East, and the Director of the IAEA, aimed at discussing ways to resolve the crisis related to the Iranian nuclear file.
The Foreign Ministry pointed out that these contacts come “within the framework of efforts to support security and stability and reduce tensions in the region, and to take advantage of the positive momentum that arose after the signing of the Cairo agreement between Iran and the IAEA on September 9th.”
The talks also addressed, according to the statement, the need to “create favorable conditions for the resumption of dialogue between Iran and the United States, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive agreement on the Iranian nuclear file, taking into account the interests of all parties and contributing to enhancing regional security and stability.”
It was agreed to “continue following up on efforts and contacts, and studying the proposals submitted to achieve the desired progress in this regard,” as stated in the Egyptian statement.
It is worth mentioning that Cairo announced on September 9th that Iran and the IAEA had reached an agreement to resume cooperation between them, which had stopped in June 2025, after Egyptian mediation.
These contacts come after the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced the end of the term of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, issued on October 18, 2015, which aimed to support the nuclear agreement, which means that Iran is not bound by the UN restrictions imposed on its nuclear program.
The aforementioned resolution, which was concluded in 2015 between Iran and major powers, allowed for restricting Iranian nuclear activities in exchange for lifting the economic sanctions imposed on it by the Security Council.
