The head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Islami, announced a new agreement with Russia to build 8 additional nuclear reactors in Iran, including 4 reactors at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
Islami said in a statement reported by official media: “The contracts between the two governments include the construction of 8 reactors with a total capacity of 5,000 megawatts in Bushehr, with the location of the other four units east of Hormozgan province in the south of the country to be announced later.”
He added that the MoU represents a joint confirmation of accelerating the implementation of the project, noting that the second part of the contract concerns small nuclear power plants (SMR), which was added as a new annex to the main agreement.
The Iranian official continued that the final text of the contract will be signed in the coming days, explaining that a preliminary understanding has been reached with the Russian company “Rosatom” regarding the implementation of the project.
