US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent confirmed that Iran takes the US sanctions imposed on it seriously, linking its recent moves to the economic losses it is incurring.
Speaking to reporters during a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors in North Carolina, Besant said: “I think they are responding strongly because they are losing economically.”
He stressed that Washington will continue to exert pressure on Iran, while he explained in an interview with CNBC that the US administration seeks to create the conditions that will make Tehran willing to sit at the negotiating table.
Besant pointed out that what the United States and China agree on regarding Iran exceeds what they disagree on in this file.
His statements came in light of the continuing escalation between Washington and Tehran, and after Iranian attacks against American targets.
US President Donald Trump had vowed, during an interview with Fox News, to respond to the Iranian attacks, in conjunction with his administration’s confirmation of continuing economic pressure on Tehran.
