An expert reveals: This is what partial charging of the phone battery does

Dr. Alexei Devlyansky, associate professor at the Russian University of Technology, pointed out that to prevent fires and the risk of electric shock, the charger can be kept connected to the socket without connecting it to the phone.

He said: Modern pulsed power supplies have built-in protection against short circuits and overheating. But this is not considered completely safe from an engineering standpoint. “We are not talking about an immediate failure, but rather about a gradual deterioration of the components and hidden losses that directly affect the life of the phone and the efficiency of energy consumption in the home.”

According to him, modern power controllers in phones cut off the current when charging reaches 100 percent, but if the charger is constantly connected and the phone is close to it, the power source continues to generate an electromagnetic field in the wire.

He said: “When the charge level drops to 99 percent, the controller begins to recharge. These partial charges (5 to 10 times a night) create what is called a ‘peak mode’ for the controller to operate, which generates excess heat in the battery. This will not damage the battery in one month, but after a year, you will find that it has lost 15-20 percent of its capacity instead of the 10 percent expected with moderate use. This is the price of negligence.”

According to him, if the battery life of a leading smartphone is important, it is better to disconnect the charger immediately after charging.

“More importantly, it is not recommended to cover the plugged-in charger with a cloth or paper – heat dissipation at idle is minimal, but if dust accumulates and there is no ventilation, local overheating could lead to melting of the plastic casing,” he said. (Russia Today)
