US President Donald Trump mocked the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn his executive order restricting the granting of citizenship by birth, directing a sarcastic congratulations to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform: “I congratulate the Chinese President and China on the great victory for birthright citizenship,” referring to the Supreme Court’s rejection of his decision.
Trump called on Congress to take action to abolish birthright citizenship through new legislation, considering that the Supreme Court’s decision was “unfortunate for the country,” but he believed that it could be overcome by issuing a new law.
In turn, US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his disappointment with the Supreme Court’s decision.
The US Supreme Court had invalidated Trump’s executive order, affirming that the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution guarantees US citizenship to almost all children born on US soil, and that the executive order contradicts the constitutional text and the established judicial interpretation of it.
Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized in the merits of the ruling that the concept of citizenship represents one of the basic constitutional principles, and that the Fourteenth Amendment was established to guarantee this right to everyone born free within the United States.
