A member of the Iranian negotiating team announced that the Tehran delegation participating in the talks with the United States in Switzerland has completed a draft agreement that paves the way for granting a temporary exemption from the US sanctions imposed on the Iranian oil sector and its derivatives, in a step that may constitute the first practical measure within the process of ongoing understandings between the two sides.
The Iranian Fars Agency quoted a member of the negotiating delegation, Hossein Qorbanzadeh, as saying that the implementation of the temporary exemption from sanctions will begin “soon,” noting that the current talks focus on the mechanism for implementing Article 13 of the memorandum of understanding signed between Washington and Tehran.
Qurbanzadeh explained that the discussions revolve around laying the necessary foundations for implementing the rest of the terms of the agreement, which include ending military operations on various fronts, lifting the blockade, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, granting temporary exemptions from oil sanctions, in addition to releasing Iranian assets frozen abroad.
The Iranian official linked progress in other files to reaching a solution to the war in Lebanon, stressing that the remaining provisions of the memorandum of understanding will not enter into force before this file is addressed.
These statements come in conjunction with the continuation of US-Iranian negotiations in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock, where US Vice President J.D. Vance is leading the US delegation, while Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf heads the Iranian delegation.
This is the first round of discussions held within the framework of implementing the memorandum of understanding signed last week, which stipulates the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the cessation of hostilities, including the Lebanese front.
