Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi heads to the Iranian capital, Tehran, on a visit aimed at following up on developments in the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States.
Al Arabiya sources reported that the visit comes within the framework of diplomatic efforts made by Islamabad to support the path of understanding between the two sides, after Pakistan played a prominent role during the past months in bringing viewpoints closer and helping to reach the recently announced memorandum of understanding.
The sources indicated that the visit gains special importance as the US-Iranian agreement enters a new phase related to technical negotiations, which will address the details of the nuclear files, sanctions, and mechanisms for implementing mutual obligations.
Pakistan was one of the most prominent mediators participating in indirect communications between Washington and Tehran, along with Qatar, as it hosted and coordinated a number of meetings and communications that paved the way for the initial understanding between the two parties.
Islamabad seeks to maintain the current diplomatic momentum and prevent any stumble that may face the negotiations during the next stage, especially in light of the continuing disagreements over some technical and political files related to the final agreement.
The visit also comes at a time when regional diplomatic movements are witnessing increasing momentum, with continued consultations between the various parties concerned to ensure the implementation of the terms of the memorandum of understanding and create the necessary conditions for moving to a more comprehensive agreement.
Naqvi is expected to meet with a number of Iranian officials to discuss developments in the negotiations and the next phase of the dialogue with the United States, in addition to discussing regional developments related to the agreement.
