The Saudi national team snatched a valuable point at the beginning of its 2026 World Cup campaign, after imposing a 1-1 draw on the Uruguay national team, in the match that brought them together in the first round of the eighth group.
“Al-Akhdar” took the lead with Abdul-Ilah Al-Omari’s goal in the 41st minute, before Maximiliano Araujo equalized for Uruguay in the 80th minute, leaving each team with a point at the start of their World Cup campaign.

The Saudi national team almost achieved a historic achievement by keeping a clean sheet throughout the match, an achievement that had not been achieved since its victory over Belgium with an unanswered goal in the 1994 World Cup, but Araujo’s late goal prevented that.

The Saudi national team is participating in the World Cup finals for the seventh time in its history, and before facing Uruguay, it played 19 matches, during which it achieved four victories and two draws, compared to 13 defeats.

The draw gives the Saudi national team a morale boost before its next match against Spain, while Uruguay is preparing to face Cape Verde in the same group competitions.
