In a step that reflects the acceleration of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the tension between Washington and Tehran, the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussed with US President Donald Trump the results of the ongoing consultations and understandings between the United States and Iran, during a phone call that also addressed regional and international developments.
According to what was reported by Qatar News Agency, the two sides reviewed the close strategic relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them, in addition to the latest developments related to efforts to reduce escalation in the region and the existing negotiating path between Washington and Tehran.
Trump confirmed during the call that the understandings reached had achieved remarkable progress, noting that all concerned parties agreed on the main foundations proposed within the framework of the expected settlement, with the participation and support of a number of brotherly and friendly countries, including the State of Qatar.
The US President pointed out that work is continuing to complete the final procedures in preparation for announcing the arrangements for signing the agreement, at a time when regional and international contacts are intensifying to achieve what he previously described as a “wonderful settlement” between the United States and Iran.
For his part, the Emir of Qatar welcomed the efforts aimed at resolving differences through dialogue and peaceful means, stressing Doha’s support for all initiatives that contribute to enhancing regional and international security and stability and consolidating opportunities for peace and cooperation among the countries of the region. He also expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by Trump to advance the path of calm and de-escalation.
In a related context, Trump announced that he had held a series of contacts with a number of Middle Eastern leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in addition to the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, indicating that he intends to speak soon with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to complete consultations related to the upcoming agreement.
Trump had previously announced that what he described as a “just settlement” had been reached to end the war with Iran, suggesting that the agreement would be signed in Europe within the next few days, and stressing that this understanding might open the door to a new phase of stability in the region.
However, the Iranian position is still characterized by caution, as Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei confirmed that the negotiations were affected by the violations that affected the ceasefire, indicating that the mediators are still continuing their efforts, and that what is being discussed about the final agreement is still within the framework of speculation, denying that a final agreement has been reached yet.
Qatar is emerging again as one of the most prominent regional mediators in the complex files between Washington and Tehran, after playing pivotal roles over the past years in facilitating indirect negotiations and exchanging messages between the two parties. Doha also contributed to a number of understandings related to humanitarian and security files, which strengthened its position as a reliable channel of communication between the two sides.
The international community is awaiting the results of these negotiations, as they may have direct repercussions on Gulf security, navigation traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and global energy markets, at a time when observers believe that the success of the expected agreement may constitute one of the most prominent political transformations in the region in recent years.
