Meta acknowledged that the number of its daily active users decreased by 20 million this quarter, and the company is taking steps to improve the quality of its Facebook and Instagram pages, as the company reported a decline in the number of “family daily active” users, a term coined by Meta to include all users of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

According to what the “9to5mac” website reported, while the company attributes this decrease to internet outages in Iran and WhatsApp restrictions in Russia, a number of users expressed their dissatisfaction with the quality of the content of the posts, especially with the appearance of many ads.

Engadget notes that Meta is also making new adjustments to Instagram’s recommendation algorithm in a belated attempt to improve the quality of content. The company is also updating its guidelines to give priority to “original content” in photo posts and sequential posts on Instagram.

With this change, you may limit the reach of accounts that repost photos or serial posts without substantive modifications, as the Meta platform explains: “If your account mostly posts non-original videos, photos, or animations that you did not create or substantially modify, your account may not appear among the recommendations directed to new audiences.”

The site indicates that the social network does almost the same thing on Facebook, and it remains to be clear over time whether either of these two measures will make a tangible difference.
