Wars raise pistachio prices to an unprecedented peak in 8 years

Global pistachio prices witnessed a noticeable rise, reaching their highest levels in eight years, due to the consequences of the war and geopolitical tensions that exacerbated the situation in a market already suffering from a lack of supply, trade disturbances, and sanctions.

Last March, the price of one pound of pistachios reached $4.57, its highest level since May 2018, as a result of increasing pressures on Iranian trade, bottlenecks in shipping, and the impact of supply lines heading to major markets.

Iran is the second largest producer of pistachios in the world after the United States, contributing about one-fifth of global production and approximately one-third of international exports.

Analysts explained that the Iranian pistachio market was already facing difficulties before the recent events, including international sanctions, a lower-than-expected crop for 2025, in addition to communications outages that hindered the coordination of export operations.

The outbreak of war complicated this critical situation, increasing the contraction of the market as a result of the shortage of available quantities and the difficulty of their access to global markets, especially since the region is an important center for the production of this commodity, which is greatly affected by any security disturbances.
