Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, the former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player, criticized Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho, the current coach of Benfica, because of his comments he made after the alleged “racism” incident between the Argentine player Gianluca Pristiani and the Brazilian player Vinicius Junior, the Real Madrid star.
Vinicius Junior had accused Pristiani of directing racist statements at him during the match between Real Madrid and Benfica, in the first leg of the preliminary round qualifying for the round of 16 of the Champions League.
In statements to the Guardian newspaper, Hasselbaink expressed his dissatisfaction, saying: “We keep getting dragged into this again. It’s as if we have to start over every time. It never ends.”
Hasselbaink touched on his experience with Atletico Madrid, saying: “I was the only one who was spat on by the fans, and I was almost the only black player on the team. No one helped me. It makes you feel worthless. It makes you feel like a piece of dirt. Everyone moved on. It wasn’t talked about much.”
