A new scientific study reveals that lemon balm, also known as balm, has components that enhance brain health and help protect against infections.
Researchers carefully analyzed the components of lemon balm, and discovered the presence of large concentrations of the following acids: “rosmarinic,” “chlorogenic,” “caffeic,” and “caviaric.” These compounds are known for their effectiveness as antioxidants and their ability to protect the body and nervous system from infections.
A plant with therapeutic benefits
Experiments conducted on mice showed that lemon balm extract protects the cells of the hypothalamus in mice from oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide. This extract also succeeded in reducing the gene expression level of pro-inflammatory factors such as “TNF-α” and “NOS-2”, and raised the level of “BDNF”, a vital protein that supports the survival and flexibility of nerve cells.
In other tests conducted on rat neurons, lemon balm extract succeeded in inhibiting the gene expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and acetylcholinesterase, which are considered signs of inflammation and cognitive disorders.
However, the researchers note that it is too early to talk about the clinical effects of lemon balm, but their findings suggest the possibility of using it in developing products and nutritional supplements that support brain health and enhance cognitive abilities.
