Because of a password... Wafa, a former player, exposes a drug network in Liverpool

One of the strangest drug smuggling cases witnessed in Britain has turned the page, after the conviction of a former English footballer. The reason for his downfall was his unsuccessful choice of a password for his encrypted communications, as he used the name of his old club to secure his communication within a criminal network.

The story centers on Francis Vinter, a former player at Barrow Club, who was convicted in a Liverpool court and sentenced to nine years in prison, after his involvement as one of the leading elements in a drug trafficking network within the city was proven.

Vinter began his football career in 1995 with “Barrow”, and participated in 27 matches with him in the defense position, before later moving to other clubs such as Morecambe and Bootle. After retiring from football, he returned for a period to “Barrow” in temporary administrative and coaching duties, then moved away from the field before gradually becoming involved in activities linked to organized crime.

According to investigations, he played a key role in the distribution of cocaine and ketamine, relying on encrypted phones that used the “Encro Chat” system used by crime networks to communicate without supervision.

However, according to available information, his death was due to a simple mistake: he used the name of his former club “Barrow” as a password for his encrypted phone, which helped the National Crime Agency, in cooperation with international bodies, to decipher the conversations and reveal his identity.

According to what The Sun newspaper reported, Venter was using an alias, “Dillforest,” and was linked to deals that included large quantities of cocaine and about 63 kilograms of ketamine, with a market value estimated at about 500,000 pounds sterling. The conversations also revealed that he personally disclosed personal details such as his date of birth, home address, and information about his family, which expedited the process of identifying and arresting him.
