US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent confirmed on Thursday that any additional punitive measures the United States may take against Russia will be directly linked to the course of negotiations aimed at ending the conflict that has been ongoing in Ukraine for nearly four years.
Picent explained that he is studying the possibility of imposing new sanctions on the Russian so-called “shadow fleet,” a step that President Donald Trump has hesitated to take since his return to power in January 2025.
Speaking before the Senate, Besant said: “I will keep that in mind, and we will see where the peace talks go.”
He pointed out that the sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on the two giant Russian oil companies, “Rosneft” and “Lukoil,” played a role, according to his statements, in encouraging Russia to sit at the negotiating table and participate in the peace talks. (Sky News)
