Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned on Sunday that any US military attack on Iran would ignite a regional war in the region.
Tasnim News Agency, which is close to the government, quoted Khamenei as saying: “If the United States attacks our country, the matter will turn into a regional conflict.”
In a related context, Khamenei described the recent demonstrations in Iran as a “coup attempt” that was successfully put down, stressing that these disturbances were aimed at weakening important government institutions. He stated, “The goal of the recent protests was to destroy sensitive and effective centers in the country’s administration,” adding: “Therefore, they attacked police stations, government headquarters, Revolutionary Guard centers, and banks.”
The Iranian guide also added, “They attacked the centers that manage the country’s affairs. This was similar to a coup.”
These statements come in light of the efforts made by the Iranian government to stabilize the security situation after a wave of protests that spread to several cities.
