Social Affairs: A plan to address public housing issues

At the invitation of the Minister of Social Affairs, Haneen Al-Sayyed, and with the participation of Engineer Ronnie Lahoud, Director General of the General Housing Corporation, the Ministry of Social Affairs held a national consultative meeting, directed to discuss the path of the national strategy for public housing in Lebanon. This is in the context of a participatory approach that aims to lay the foundations for a fair and sustainable housing policy, in light of the current difficult social and economic conditions.

The two-day meeting witnessed the presence of more than 70 representatives of the concerned parties, including the Governor of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, the general directors of the relevant ministries, the President of the Council for Development and Reconstruction, a representative of the Bank of Lebanon andHousing Bankmayors, representatives of the security services, and the Syndicates of Engineers in Beirut and Tripoli, in addition to representatives of unions, civil society and academia, which reflects the participatory and pluralistic nature of this path.

In this regard, Minister Al-Sayyid stated that “preparing the national housing strategy requires the actual involvement of various partners,” stressing “the importance of this consultative meeting as a space for dialogue and exchange of experiences,” with the aim of developing an applicable action plan that establishes the right to adequate housing as one of the basics of comprehensive social protection, and is in line with the Ministry’s new strategy.

For his part, Lahoud stressed “the role that the Foundation has played since its founding in supporting the right to housing,” considering that “this discussion constitutes an essential opportunity to move towards a clear national strategy that restores hope to the Lebanese citizen.”

It was also emphasized during the meeting that adequate housing is the basis of family and community stability, and an essential element in promoting social justice and reducing poverty and vulnerability, especially in light of the housing crisis that has been exacerbated by successive crises, which have led to a decrease in purchasing power, the disruption of financing programs, and an increase in the gap between supply and demand, especially for those with limited and middle income.

The roadmap for the National Housing Strategy represents a national framework aimed at developing public policies related to the housing sector, proposing innovative and sustainable financing solutions, strengthening partnerships between the public and private sectors, and cooperating with international organizations, with a focus on adopting a practical and implementable approach.

The Ministry of Social Affairs renewed its commitment, in cooperation with the General Corporation for Housing and all partners, to support any initiative that contributes to providing affordable housing, protecting the most vulnerable groups, and enhancing social stability, considering that housing policy is one of the basic pillars of the recovery path and building a safer and more dignified future for all Lebanese.
