The Speaker of the House of Representatives renewed Nabih Berri Confirming Lebanon’s full commitment to the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement and to the “Mechanisms Committee” in form and content, rejecting the stories that have been circulating recently, which he described as “lies and fabrications,” which he said harm the Lebanese position, create internal confusion, and make Lebanon appear as if it has slackened or abandoned its principles in confronting Lebanon. Israel.
In an interview with RepublicBerri stressed, in response to a question, that “our position is clear and well-known. We are committed to, and even committed to, the cessation of hostilities agreement. We are also committed to the Mechanisms Committee in its form and content, and we do not accept any questioning of this commitment.”
Berri explained that the Mechanisms Committee essentially emerged from the cessation of hostilities agreement, and Lebanon has a direct interest in its continuation, given that its role is supposed to focus on stopping attacks, monitoring the implementation of the agreement, and preventing violations. He added that the main problem is that Israel, from the beginning, has been seeking to destroy this committee, despite its negative performance and its failure to properly perform the role required of it.
Berri’s position comes in light of the escalation of internal debate related to security developments in the south, and the increasing contradictory narratives about the mechanisms for implementing the cessation of hostilities agreement, and the role of the Mechanisms Committee in monitoring implementation and controlling violations.
The committee was formed within the framework of the agreement to follow up on violations and prevent attacks, but its performance remained the subject of widespread Lebanese criticism, in light of the continuation of Israeli attacks and repeated violations, which reopened the debate about its effectiveness and the feasibility of its role, in parallel with repeated official Lebanese assurances of adhering to the agreement and rejecting any violation of its principles or circumvention of them.
