Activists reported on Wednesday that the satellite internet service provider “Starlink” is now offering its services for free inside Iran.
In a statement to the AP, Mehdi Yahya Nejad, an activist based in Los Angeles who helped bring equipment into Iran, explained that the free service has already begun. Other activists confirmed the free service through online messages.
Yahya Nejad added in a statement: “We can confirm that the free subscription for Starlink devices is fully functional. We tested it using a newly activated Starlink device inside Iran.”
“Starlink” is considered the only available outlet for Iranians to communicate with the outside world, after the authorities cut off the internet last Thursday night, coinciding with the escalation of protests across the country and the start of a bloody crackdown against protesters.
Starlink has not issued an immediate confirmation of this announcement.
