“Amal Al Fallah Seghrouchni,” Morocco’s Minister of Digital Transition, announced the Kingdom’s ambition to increase its gross domestic product by nearly 100 billion dirhams, equivalent to 10 billion dollars, by 2030. This plan relies on a strategy aimed at supporting and developing artificial intelligence, with a marked increase in investments directed towards training, establishing sovereign data centers, and developing cloud services.
The minister indicated that Morocco, whose economy currently stands at approximately 170 billion dollars, is planning to invest in specialized artificial intelligence centers, in cooperation with universities and the private sector, in addition to integrating artificial intelligence applications into both public administration and various productive sectors.
During a conference held in Rabat on Monday, the minister clarified that this expected increase in GDP will be achieved mainly through strengthening local capabilities in data processing via sovereign data centers, expanding the scope of cloud computing infrastructure and fiber optic networks, and developing specialized human competencies in artificial intelligence to support its use in various fields, according to Reuters.
The ambitious Moroccan plan includes creating 50,000 jobs related to the artificial intelligence sector and qualifying 200,000 graduates with specialized skills in this field by 2030.
In the same context, the minister signed a partnership agreement with the French artificial intelligence company “Mistral” to support the development of generative artificial intelligence tools in Morocco.
“Seghrouchni” affirmed that the government is striving to transform Morocco into a distinguished regional center in the fields of artificial intelligence and data science, while working on formulating a legal framework that regulates the use of these technologies.
Morocco has allocated 11 billion dirhams, equivalent to approximately 1.2 billion dollars, to implement the digital transformation strategy for the period from 2024 to 2026, which includes artificial intelligence initiatives and the expansion of fiber optic networks.
In a related context, the Kingdom intends to establish a data center that relies on renewable energy with a capacity of 500 megawatts in the city of Dakhla in the south of the country, in order to enhance the security of national data storage and ensure sovereignty over it. (Al Arabiya)
