The Algeria-Nigeria match witnessed widespread refereeing controversy.
The Algerian Football Federation intends to submit a formal protest to both the International Federation of Football Associations “FIFA” and the Confederation of African Football “CAF”, due to what it considers poor refereeing performance during the match in which the “Desert Warriors” lost to Nigeria with a score of (2-0) on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations (Morocco 2025).
According to Algerian media reports, the complaint will focus on details of objections to a number of refereeing decisions made by Senegalese referee “Issa Sy”, including the failure to award a penalty kick, in addition to other decisions considered controversial and affecting the course of the match, accusing him of bias in favor of the Nigerian team.
The complaint will also include reference to the fact that the referee did not shake hands with the Algerian national team players after the end of the match, a behavior that caused great resentment in the ranks of the “Greens” delegation, in addition to accusations leveled against Nigerian players of carrying out provocative acts towards their opponents.
The Algerian Federation will also file a complaint regarding what it describes as “assaults on Algerian journalists and media personnel inside the tunnel exiting the stadium.”
Based on these events, Algeria intends to demand the suspension of referee “Issa Sy” and prevent him from managing any other matches in the tournament immediately.
