OpenAI: Developing an Advanced Digital Pen

Recent reports reveal that “OpenAI” is developing a smart pen that connects to the “ChatGPT” artificial intelligence assistant and has voice capabilities, according to the American technology news site “Android Authority.”

The report stated that this pen is the mysterious device that “OpenAI” has been working on for more than a year, specifically since announcing its collaboration with the well-known designer Jony Ive, one of the most important names that contributed to the design of “iPhone” devices during his time at “Apple.”

The report also stated that “OpenAI” acquired the company established by Jony Ive after he left “Apple” last year for $6.5 billion, according to a separate report by “Bloomberg,” in a move aimed at owning a production unit specializing in the production of devices based on artificial intelligence.

According to the information available, the secret name of the project is “Gumdrop,” and it is scheduled to be manufactured in “Foxconn” factories located in Vietnam, which is the company responsible for producing “iPhone” phones and a number of other smart devices. The report explained that “OpenAI” does not intend to manufacture the device in China, despite the presence of factories there, due to concerns related to taxes and penalties.

The smart pen is expected to work by connecting to “ChatGPT” servers via smartphones, with the ability to convert handwritten notes into digital documents, record sounds and convert them into written texts, in addition to using the smart assistant vocally.

In a related context, a report by the “TechCrunch” website indicated that “OpenAI” is seeking to expand in the field of audio products, as it has redirected some teams within the company to develop a new audio model and related products, in preparation for launching a smart audio device during the coming year.

The report suggested that the expected device will be a portable or home smart speaker, in line with the trends of major technology companies in this field.
