A news report issued in Spain today, Wednesday, reported on Barcelona’s plans to strengthen their defense during the upcoming winter transfer period.
Barcelona received a severe blow with the injury of their Danish defender, Andreas Christensen, who suffered a cruciate ligament tear, which will lead to his absence until the end of the season at the very least, knowing that his current contract expires at the end of the season.
The media had previously mentioned that Barcelona wanted to sign the English international, Marc Guéhi, Crystal Palace defender, next January.
But according to the Catalan newspaper “Sport”, coach Hans Flick and the management will decide on finalizing a new deal in January, before the end of this year.
The newspaper confirmed that Flick is concerned about Christensen’s injury, especially with the noticeable decline in Ronald Araújo’s level recently.
“Sport” indicated that Flick had already agreed with the Barcelona management not to make any new signings in January, but Christensen’s injury disrupted all his calculations.
The newspaper added that signing a new defender in January is no longer just an option, but has become an urgent necessity to avoid any major damage that may befall the team if another defender is injured.
Flick is studying the possibility of signing a “left-footed” defender capable of playing as a left-back, in addition to his primary position as a center-back.
The newspaper clarified that if Barcelona can find a player with these qualities, the club will immediately move to complete the deal.
