SPORTEL Monaco 2025 - Global Sports Media & Technology Convention - Day Two

In an interview with the Catalan newspaper “Sport,” Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, renewed his criticism of Real Madrid, holding them responsible for the increasing tension and discontent in Spanish football, especially regarding referees and the league in general.

Tebas explained that the Royal Club, through the club’s television channel and the statements of its president Florentino Pérez, is working to promote a false and misleading story linking current refereeing errors to the old Negreira case, in which Barcelona was accused of involvement between 2017 and 2019.

“What generates tension in this case is not Barcelona, nor the other clubs, but Real Madrid is the one attacking everyone. It is against Barcelona, against the referees, and against everything, and I think that is done in a wrong and misleading way, with a narrative that is not useful at all,” Tebas stated.

The president of La Liga pointed out that this media campaign is causing a state of constant discontent. He affirmed that the association was the first to file a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the Negreira case, demanding a thorough investigation and the imposition of sporting sanctions if necessary, “although the crime has expired in Spain,” as he mentioned.
